The general theme for the celebration is: “Museum and Memory”.

The two lectures to be presented on May 18 would be on the topics: “Museums and Memory” and “Care and access to Museum Collections.”

A statement signed by Mr Alex K. Okpei, Volta Regional Head of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, said the celebration, the first in the region, “will be an opportunity to discover and rediscover our individual and collective memory”.

It underscored the importance of Museums as expression of the national natural and cultural heritage.

It said the month long celebrations would feature an open house for selected teachers in Accra, free entry to all Museums and Monument Board facilities countrywide from May 18 to May 22, free film shows on Ghana’s culture from May 18 to June 17 this year.

The statement said the International Museums Day was established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977 “to encourage public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society.

“Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, co-operation and peace among peoples”, the release said.

She said it is only when there is peace that investors and other developers could invest in the area to better the lot of the people.

Madam Benyiwa-Doe made the call at a durbar of chiefs to run-off activities of the 2011 Aboakyire festival of the Effutu Traditional Area in Winneba on Saturday.

The theme for celebration was “Reconciliation for development”.

She said the Aboakyire festival has attained local and international recognition and must be celebrated devoid of misunderstandings and troubles.

She emphasised the need for the people in the region to join hands to ensure that central region becomes the leading tourist attraction in the nation.

The Tuafo Asafo Company brought the first catch of a live Deer to the durbar grounds at 12.05 noon for Nana Bondzie II, head of Otuano Royal family who deputised for the Omanhene to step on it to declare its acceptance for customs and traditions.

Nana Bondzie in his address, extended a special tribute to the Winneba Peace Initiative, a Non- Governmental Organisation (NGO) and those who contributed towards a peaceful celebration of the festival.

The Member of Parliament in the area and Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Mike Hammah appealed to his people to sacrifice and let the development of the area be their priority.

The Tufuhene, who is the traditional head of the two Asafo Companies in the town, Nana Otubua Siripi said chiefs as custodians of the traditional heritage of their people, would do everything possible to facilitate and enhance the government’s development for the traditional area.

The Mayor of a visiting Charlottesville-USA, delegation in the Effutu Municipality, Mayor Norris, expressed their appreciation to the people for the hospitality given them and promised to help promote the festival to an international level.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the second National Executive Council meeting of the Ghana Hotels Association at Takoradi on Thursday, he said effective collaboration between the Association and the GTB would help to make tourism one of the fastest growing sectors.

The meeting was under theme: “Training and Retaining the current Generation of Hotel Employees”.

Mr Hammond said the GTB was prepared to continue to partner the Association to further improve service delivery in hotels in the country.

He said GTB had lined up training programmes for members of the Association and individual hotels, and however expressed regret that some hoteliers did not fully appreciate the work of the Board.

He urged the leadership of the Association to form a strong and vibrant lobby group to enable it to face the challenges confronting the industry.

Mr Herbert Acquaye, National President of the Association, said national executive council meetings were held four times in a year for dialogue on issues affecting the about 1,500 members.

He said the Association was planning to institute an awards scheme in 2012 to recognize and reward its members and personnel in the industry for innovation and superior performance in service delivery.

Mr Acquaye said the Association would also conduct research to enable it to provide salary guide for the various categories of staff at hotels to help to bridge the disparities in remuneration in the industry.

Mr Acquaye asked members to create improved workplace policies and practices to enhance interaction and understanding between proprietors, management and staff of hotels.

Mr Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, Member of Parliament for Takoradi presided over the meeting.

Twenty-five foreign pilots flew the people from a height of over 2,000 feet above sea level on the Odweanoma mountains to the landing sight at Nkawkaw at a cost of GH¢80 per flight.

The Head of Public Relations of the Ghana Tourist Board, Mr Ohene Ayeh, disclosed this to the media at the take-off sight on the Odweanoma Mountain on Monday.

Mr Ayeh said a 38–year old Ghana based South African pilot, Mr Vorster Helgaard had an abortive flight when he was swayed to the rocks of the mountains.

As he could not land at Nkawkaw on Friday, he had to spend the night on the rocks till the following day before being rescued.

He said Helgaard was rescued by a 26-year-old volunteer, Samuel Sefa, who climbed the mountain, tied a rope to a tree and assisted him to descend to a point.

Mr Ayeh said a re-enforcement rescue team from the 64 battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the Police and Fire Service then took the victim through a walk-way into an ambulance which transported him into a helicopter at Mpraeso and later sent to 37 Military Hospital where he was treated and discharged.

In his closing address, the Director of Operations of the Ghana Tourist Board, Mr Frank Kofigah, acknowledged the success of this year’s paragliding festival and commended the pilots for their hard work.

He called on Kwahu businessmen, cooperate bodies and other stakeholders to support the government to develop the paragliding festival to generate adequate revenue for the country and also promote domestic tourism in the area.

Mr Kofigah urged the foreign pilots to train the local people to undertake the exercise since they could not always rely on them to undertake the flights.

This, he said, would turn the facility into a “gold mine” for the Yilo Krobo District Assembly and the country as a whole.

Nene Tuumeh made the appeal at Somanya when the Eastern Regional Minister, Dr Kwasi Akyem Apea-Kubi, called on him as part of his tour of the area to inspect government development projects.

He called for the establishment of a cement factory to process the lime stone deposit in the area as well as the establishment of a mango factory to process the large volume of mangoes grown in the district to help reduce youth unemployment in the area.

Nene Tuumeh called for the diversion of the road used by the heavy trucks which transport limestone from the area from the main towns to help reduce the number of motor accidents.

He appealed to the Regional Co-ordinating Council to prevail on GHACEM Cement Works, owner of the limestone mine to honour its social obligation to the chiefs and people in the area.

The Regional Minister gave the assurance that he would support the development of the Boti Falls and called on entrepreneurs to invest in the establishment of a mango processing plant at the Yilo Krobo area.

The Minister inspected various projects that had been undertaken in the district within the last two years and appealed to contractors working on the projects to complete the works on schedule.

History
The name “Ghana”
Some five decades ago, on 6th of March 1957, the British colony of Gold Coast (Ghana’s former pre-independence name) became independent and assumed the name Ghana. Before that year, the Gold Coast consisted of the Gold Coast colony which comprised British processions on the Gold Coast littoral and extended less than one hundred miles inland up to the river Pra; The Ashanti, which then included today’s Ashanti, Brong Ahafo and parts of Easter Region.

For those wondering where the name Ghana was assumed? There are mainly three reasons. First, the “Ghana” was not ethnically specific to any of the country’s numerous ethnic groups. This name was therefore though to help engender the spirit of national coercion and consciousness. Second, the spectacular example of ancient Ghana in building a great African empire that endured for three centuries was emulating by the emergent nation. Finally, some of the founding fathers of Ghana argued that the Akan (an ethnic group in Ghana) of the Gold Coast, who constituted nearly 45% of the population, were descendants of the ancient Ghana Empire that flourished from the 9th to the 13th Centuries between the Sahara and head waters of the Senegal and Niger rivers.

<g:plusone size="standard" count="" href="http://pathghana.com/achimota-forest-to-become-a-world-class-ecotourism-hub-in-2012.html"></g:plusone>

Achimota Forest will be adjusted to a world class tourism enclave without destroying the ecosystem but attempts to construct a road through it will nose-dive this objective, Mr Samuel Afari Dartey, Acting Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission has said.

Mr Dartey told the Public Accounts Committee when he appeared before it that the two-year programme, which had already started, would include nature walk in which tourists walking round would see animals in their natural habitat as they trek.

“There will be museums, eco-lodges, picnic sides, safari drives, animal introduction, arboretum for the purpose of research and many attractions that could generate a lot of income much more than the $60,000 currently generated annually,” he said.

He said however, that the road passing through the forest could badly affect not only the programme but the environment.

“Achimota Forest is the only green belt in Accra that absorbs the pollutions from the combustive motor cars and the only wind break in the city,” he said.

Mr Dartey said since those praying in the forest do not pose any threat to the forest, religious groups could be allowed to pray in the forest but must observe certain rules that would guide their activities.

The committee was stern on the management of the Forestry Commission and said it should do everything in its power to wind-up the Ghana Timber Supplies Limited that has been dormant since 2003 but continues to incur administrative, accounting and auditing costs.

The company, according to the Auditor General’s report, was a subsidiary company that was incorporated in England and Wales on the January 18, 1994 with registration number 2888798.

Mr Mike Asaam, Acting Director of Finance of the Forestry Commission, said the winding-up procedure had already begun and would soon be completed to save the state from incurring unnecessary cost.

The PAC during the turn of Mineral Marketing Company Limited (PMMC) charged its management to retrieve an ¢4,680,512,018 Sian Goldfields owed the company.

Sian Goldfield went into an agreement to supply PMMC with some precious metals which PMMC pre-financed but the commodity could not deliver making Sian Goldfields indebted to PMMC.

Mr Bernard Anang, Chief Finance Officer of Precious assured PAC that everything would be done to have the money retrieved.

Mr Ben Aryee, CEO of the Mineral Commission, said though mining could degrade the environment the benefits that mining communities derived outweigh the losses but added that there must be some improvement on the social responsibilities of the mining companies.

He said all royalties that accrued from mining activities went to the government and that 10 per cent of the amount was given to the Stool Lands Commission and 55 per cent allocated to district assembly.
